Things to do during the mid-term break in February around Ireland

It's the first one of the year and generally the hardest to keep the kids entertained.

The traditional breaks during the Christmas, Easter and October are all filled with activities for their season but the break in February is just that, a break.

Unless you involve your kids in Valentine's Day.

However, there are still some fantastic things on around the county to help you entertain your kids during the mid-term break.

National Museum of Ireland-Archaeology

Wednesday 22nd February, 2:30pm-3:15pm
Tour: Viking Ireland Family Tour 
Did you know that Dublin was founded by the Vikings? Come and explore our Viking Ireland exhibition for a hands on family tour of Viking Dublin with Museum Educator Trisha Ryan. Take a close up look at the homes the Vikings lived in, the games that they played and the crafts that they made. . 
No booking required. Meet at Reception. Places allocated on first come first served basis. Not wheelchair accessible. Free Admission. Ages 7 -12.  
 
Friday 24th February, 2pm-4pm
Drop-In Activity: Mysteries of the Lake Bed
Drop-in to our Learning Resource Room and see what it’s like to be a real archaeologist! Carefully examine the objects uncovered by underwater archaeologists to decode if they come from a Bronze Age boat or a Viking Age boat and solve the mystery of the lake bed! 
No booking required. Located in the Learning Resource Room, First Floor. Not wheelchair accessible. Free admission. Ages 8+.


National Museum of Ireland-Decorative Arts and History

Tuesday 21st February 10am-12pm & 1pm-3pm
March to Melody - Songs from Military Marches
Join a musical workshop with musician Larry Beau. Sing traditional call and response songs of military cadence - army songs from the Irish republic dating back to the 19th century. No formal music training necessary. Ages 12-16.

Fantastic Silver Beasts (and where to find them)
Discover the mythical animals hiding in our silver galleries! Go on an adventure with Catherine McGuinness to find some of the strange, exotic and unusual animals and create your own mythical creature. Art materials provided. Ages 6+.

Public Tour: Proclaiming a Republic
Join a family friendly tour of Proclaiming a Republic: The 1916 Rising exhibition, looking at some of the highlights of the Museum's extensive Easter Week collection. No booking required; places allocated on a first-come basis 15 minutes before tour starts.

Thursday 23rd February 2017, 11am - 1pm
Inspectorium: Fossil Favourites
Drop in and examine some fossil favourites from the Museum's handling collection including 20,000 year old crocodile poop!
Drop-in activity for All Ages. No booking required but there may be a short waiting period.
This drop-in session will be held in the Reading Area on the first floor and is not wheelchair accessible.

Saturday 25th February, 2:15pm & 3:30pm
Take a Trail: Spring into Action!
It's spring and all of nature is busy. Take a trail with a Museum Educator to find out more about the animals you'll see in action in Ireland this spring.
No booking required but places are limited. Wheelchair accessible.

Workshop: Viking shields 
Wednesday, 22nd February, 2.30 to 3.30pm
A fun and creative afternoon for children aged four to six. Learn how to design your very own Viking shield, with artist Tommy Casby. Find out more about Mayo’s Viking past at the temporary exhibition The Hoard and the Sword.

Family event: Vikings - Raiders, Traders & Settlers
Thursday, February 23rd, 2.30 to 3.30pm
Join the Education Team for this fun, family event to get an up-close look at the lives of our Viking ancestors. Discover objects from the Viking handling collection and find out what they tell us about these raiders, traders and settlers.

Workshop: Viking helmets
Friday, February 24th, 2.30 to 3.30pm
Learn how to wear it like a Viking with this one-hour workshop with artist Tommy Casby. Design and make your own Viking helmet and then discover more about Mayo’s Viking heritage through the exhibition The Hoard and the Sword. Suitable for adults and children aged five plus.

Westport House
